Alvaro Noboa Searches New Markets
EXTRA Newspaper | 26 October 2009

The former presidential candidate of the Prian political party, Alvaro Noboa is traveling through the world in search of new markets on which he can invest. His objective is to set national products like: banana, coffee, shrimp, vegetables, flowers, and craftworks, on international markets. His purpose is to generate work in Ecuador, since the current crisis that they are dealing with which must be overcome with productive labors.

From England, Noboa remarks the need to expand the markets for national products.

As a businessman, what is your posture regarding the current crisis lived in the country?
We have several causes. The economic policy of the Government has made that Ecuador lives the biggest crisis of this times, while increasing the unemployment rate. The policy implemented by the regime goes against the business growth; this causes that national and international companies step into a defensive stage, and that instead of investing in Ecuador, they leave the country.

How can the private business recover or produce employment sources?
The companies must perform several corrections; this would not cause more unemployment as it is currently happening, because as long as people keeps losing their jobs, there will be less consumers. For this is better to not fire anyone unless the company has no choice than to declare its bankrupt.

Regrettably that is the current tendency that has been taking on the last ten years.

I believe that the only way the government understands is through experience. For example, China, despite the world crisis it continues to grow, instead Ecuador, despite of having a high oil price, its economy keeps decreasing.

The government is applying laws that are limiting the private sector so this stops growing. What must be done?
We are living in a democracy and through the Assembly we must use the media and give an opinion. I believe it is an opportunity for me to call from Europe to Ecuador to tell about my experience as a businessman.

How can businessman be stimulated to diversify our markets?
Something is wrong with Ecuador and what is suffering is the banana sector, were legal companies like Noboa, Dole, Del Monte, are paying an official price, but informal businesses represent half of the exportation from the country which are paying considerably lower than the official price of the banana box that the big companies produce.

Despite all the problems your companies face, are you going to keep trying to be in the politics or are totally disappointed?
I have say it once and I say it again, as long as there is poverty in Ecuador I will keep trying to end it from every possible angle, even the political one.
